Core Sound Seafood was started as a way to connect the fishermen of Down East Carteret County, North Carolina to a viable, local market. Most of the fishermen that make up this coastal community Core Sound Seafoodhave been fishing all their lives – often they can trace their fishing heritage back four or five generations. Sadly, these fishermen are increasingly leaving their life on the water as global markets, community economic loss, rising fuel prices and decreasing buying prices threaten their livelihood. Our goal is to provide a market to these fishermen and their families by offering locally caught, fresh seafood to the Chapel Hill, Carrboro community through a weekly CSF (community supported fishery) share. We believe that North Carolina fishermen are a tremendous resource in our state’s diverse agricultural offerings, and including them as producers in our local food shed is vital.

Types of Seafood Available:

We will strive to include a diverse range of seafood with the composition of each week’s portion varying depending on seasonal availability and weather conditions. Members can expect to receive such species as Blue Fish, Black Drum, Black Sea Bass, Clams, Soft-Shell Crabs, Blue Crabs, Croaker, Flounder, Grey Trout, Grouper, Hog Fish, Jumping Mullet, Mahi Mahi, Oysters, Red Fish, Sea Mullet, Sea Scallops, Sheephead, Shrimp, Snapper, Spanish Mackerel, Speckled Trout, Spot, Trigger Fish. Most seafood supplied will be caught within Core Sound, when available some fish will be caught off shore out of the sound, though always locally. Typically, each weekly share will have two types of seafood in it.

Pickup Information:

You are responsible for picking up your share each week and bringing your own cooler or insulated bag to transport your seafood home. All seafood will be cleaned, filleted, ready to cook and delivered in accordance with all state and federal regulations. Your seafood will be kept at a safe temperature until you arrive. Unclaimed shares cannot be stored or held after 6:00 p.m.

Weather on the coast can be unpredictable and there may be times when weather prevents fishing. If weather prevents a fresh catch, we will extend the number of deliveries. If a pickup is cancelled or delayed, we will notify you by email as soon as possible.

If you are away and will be missing your share one week, you can get a double share the following week if you let us know by the Monday before that week’s pickup. Please try to limit this happening.
