About the Author & Photographer

Writer Michael Crocker wrote about commercial fisheries research for five years as the communications director at the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance. He attended Bates College where he studied anthropology and the University of Montana Graduate School of Journalism. He is a frequent poilitical consultant on fisheries issues. Currently, he is a media officer for Greenpeace US, based in Washington, DC.
Photo by Mark ThiessenPhotographer Becky Hale graduated from Wheaton College in Massachusetts in 1999 with a B.A. in Literature and Creative Writing. She became interested in photography after working on a mixed-media project that blended photography and creative writing. She has worked as a studio photographer at National Geographic for the last six years, on projects for a wide range of departments, including National Geographic Kids, Communications, Marketing, and National Geographic Magazine. She shoots everything from events to portraits.
